Goofy #52 - Red Barons

Hey kids, it's a Saturday matinee double feature! This sketch was my attempt at designing a mascot for the local AAA minor league baseball team, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. It's all moot now since they've left town and the fuggin' Yankees moved in. Maybe I'll pitch a mascot drawing of a huge schlong for them.

Goofy Bonus #12 - Bill and Hill

After seeing Stephen Reid's (Flintlockjaw) sketch of Bill Clinton over on his blog, I decided to move this scribble up in the "Goofy Sketch" rotation. This one features the former and future presidents back in the days when Bill was first running for President. Clinton always looked like his body was too big for his features. Remember when Hillary used to wear those headbands?

This sketch was done around '84-85 for one of the company's textbooks on Private Security. It was supposed to represent a typical hood of the era. (All the criminal element types were into heavy metal back then, weren't they?)

Another bonus sketch . . . LUCKY YOU! To get into our building at work, you have to use a swipe ID card. It's just about automatic that the damn things crap out when the weather is the worst. This cartoon appeared in the company newsletter about 5 years ago.

Goofy #48 - Fire?

I did this inane doodle after seeing a fire extinguisher hanging in the hall here at the office. I thought it was very odd that there was a sign just above it that read "Fire Extinguisher". Hell, if there was so much smoke to block out the extinguisher, then it would block out the sign too, right? Oh well. I figured if you're dense enough to need a sign telling what the extinguisher is, then you need a sign to ID the fire too.

Goofy #47 - Von Hayes

Here's a blast from the past. This is a quick doodle I did of the ball player Von Hayes. Hayes was this tall, thin left-hander that played for the Phillies back in the mid 80s. The Phils traded 5 guys for Hayes, who was thought of as the next Ted Williams. He never really panned-out, but I guess he was worthy of a sketch.

This sketch was also done during a staff meeting. I drew it to flash at the guy sitting across the table from me to try and make him laugh. Unfortunately, this doodle is appropriate for just about every staff meeting we have.

This pencil sketch was done during a staff meeting about 3 years ago. One of our hypochondriac coworkers claimed to be addicted to Paxil. He was more addicted to attention than to any drug.

It's very easy to date this one. Remember when they reported finding a WW2 warplane crashed on a mountain someplace, and that the remains of the pilot were found in the wreckage? I drew this sketch immediately after hearing that news.

Goofy Bonus #6 - Cap!

Since it's so fuggin' disgusting outside, I thought maybe a couple more bonus images may cheer me up. This next one is my version of Captain America. It was drawn on a manila folder with a huge magic marker. I scanned and did some artistic acrobatics on it in Photoshop. I'll post a scan of the original uncolored image sometime soon.

Goofy Addendum #1

You may be asking yourself, "Why the hell does this Marty guy draw pictures of himself?" Let me tell you why. Years ago, when I was a Boy Scout, I was on the Publications Committee for the council newsletter. We used to hold meetings once or twice a week. As it is my want, during those meetings I would doodle. Back then, I would look around me and draw the other folks in the meeting. One evening I was doing just that, and this huge guy I really didn't know shot me this angry glance. I was confused about it until after the meeting. He got me in the hallway, sucker-punched me, and told me he didn't appreciate my artist stylings. Since that evening, I've been very mindful not to draw anyone else unless they specifically ask for it. THAT's the reason I draw myself so much, I hardly ever get mad enough to sucker-punch myself. Nut shot, yeah, sucker-punch no.

Since it's so crappy outside, let's play two! Here's a quick sketch done in response to someone (read that as someone from the editorial staff) saying the people in the art department are "retarded". Hey, I don't even have to write this stuff.

Today's post Valentine's day blizzard sketch was done during a staff meeting last year. It's a self portrait again, with a flattop, and I'm in a foul mood. Ah, sweet sarcasm. You'll notice I have an extra finger there, too. The style is a tad too close to graffiti for my tastes, considering how much I loath illegal graffiti.

More VD love for ya'll! This sketch is one of those scribbles you do when you're pretending to listen to someone. Sometimes a doodle ain't just a doodle. I had this tiled as my wallpaper for awhile, and it gave me vertigo.

This sketch was done at the first ad agency I worked at. Our office had a copy machine that was shared by the entire floor. This one receptionist would come in and ask to use it all the time. She was impossibly tall, impossibly thin, had impossibly big hair, and wore impossible short mini skirts. Too bad she had a "butter" face.

When I worked for the ad agency, one of our clients sold musical equipment. Being a former high school marching band bass drummer (Scranton Central Golden Eagles, Class of '79) I quickly whipped up this sketch to amuse the business owner. I called him Bonzo.

Third and last of the bonus images for now. This one was the first drawing I created back in my early freelance days. I considered myself a "mercenary artist" more than a freelancer. Note: I'm not left-handed, but it worked for this image.

A sketch that represents some of the males from Northeastern PA. He didn't have a name at first, until someone saw it and said, "He's just like so-and-so, is he or no? Izzy Ornoe was born.

Goofy #35 - Morton Downey Jr.

Here's a pencil sketch I did when I was doing work for the local Fox affiliate. They carried the Morton Downey Jr. show and wanted some drawings they could use in their newspaper ad campaigns. Here's one that was never used. It's one of the few pencil sketches in the archive.

Wow, this one is from way back. During the Spuds Mckenzie ad campaign, some of those wacky TV evangelical types were implying that the dog was a soldier in satan's service. Look at the way the broads swoon over him, that has to be the devil's doggie! I left the misspelling intact.

Years ago, William Shatner was the commercial spokesman for the school I worked for. Mind you, these were the days before Priceline and Boston Legal. These were the days of the fat, unemployable Captain Kirk.
